The History Behind The Hike

June 3, 2026 Jasmine Lowe

Somewhere between the evergreen trees, lush shrubs, and wildflowers lies a string of stories that hold rich history and culture together and provide a deeper understanding of our world. Narratives of the creation of the earth and the stars, and the tale of the universe itself, point to our purpose in the cosmos and tell us who we are, where we come from, and what we may see as our destiny. Legends of mystical animals, powerful spirits, and heroic humans document the past and give us insight into our future. Knowing more about the world around you enriches your experience in the outdoors, and hearing the stories of those who came before you brings deeper meaning to the hike you take up a mountain.

I began noticing all the connecting trails in the local wilderness area near my home several years ago. I would take on a trail at a time and find how each one flowed into the next. Curiosity and questions naturally arose as the surrounding landscape revealed itself. I used to hike without knowing the names of certain trails. However, unanswered queries led me to research the answers and learn about the history of the land.

I started sharing what I learned about the piece of earth I was recreating with the internet to make the new knowledge more concrete. It became an active study involving adventure and exploration, a time capsule of my wandering fascination with the planet, and a reference point of where I would wander next. From the layers of geology that painted the towering peaks to the hydrology that carved the colossal, curving canyons.

I’ve found myself many times wandering in the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains. I’ve completed backpacking and camping trips, day hikes, snow days, and cookouts, and have made it my mission to learn one more thing about the area’s science and history with each visit. I appreciate the land more with every story I hear and with each new piece of information I obtain. The area becomes even more special with every click of the mouse and turn of the page as I soak up what was once unknown. I’ve realized and applied my interest in learning to all things in life, further enriching my experience with everything I do. With more knowledge and understanding comes greater gratitude, admiration, and respect for all of existence.

You can check out a little bit of what I have learned about the San Jacinto Mountains here.
